THE KILPATRICK PROJECT - WHERE I COME IN by John "Stoney" Cannon
Mixing elements of early 80's English pop, emo and in some cases new wave, rock quartet THE KILPATRICK PROJECT, have carved their own niche in the Augusta music scene. Whether you dig 'em or not, there's no denying the bands one of a kind sound or that they deliver electrifying performances time after time. On "Where I Come In", the band also deliver on disc.

Starting off with "Falling to You", frontman Miles Kilpatrick and company passionately rev things up first with Mr. Kilpatrick's angst-filled vocals crying out before a short reprieve builds into a ball of energy that stops with all the velocity of a crash test dummy hitting a testing wall full force.

The title track "Where I Come In" begins in a sort of Joe Jackson piano-vocal interplay before Kilpatrick's Brit pop vocals take over. While the music explodes underneath, it is clear that the passion of this song was meant to be expressed by Kilpatrick's vocals.

"Been Locked Inside" continues with the bands english pop style while adding a bit of euro soul and synth pop as well. This tuned could have easily been included on a soundtrack for 80's Brit pop with such bands as Spandau Ballet and ABC. But before you get the idea that I am labeling this band as "dated" think again. This is what the Breakfast Club would sound like in 2004, not 1984. Nostalgic maybe, but great new music nevertheless.

The guys add a more US inspired new wave to the disc via "Right Hand", perhaps inadvertantly paying homage to New Jersey's Violent Femmes before jumping into the now with a blast of modern emo complete with screams galore. very powerful tune.

Closing out this ep is the incredible composition "Mann Ray" which plays completely off of all the bands strengths, showcasing a unique piano sound, great guitar melody and vocal harmony. Possible one on the better lokal music songs created in the past few years and considering all the great music that encompasses, that's saying alot!

THE KILPATRICK PROJECT may be an acquired taste in these parts, but for the musically diverse and open-minded, this unique lokal four-piece is a musical force worth checking out. There are many great bands in Augusta but finding one that's not only musically great but unique as well is hard in any music scene. THE KILPATRICK PROJECT is one such band that carries those qualities in Augusta, Georgia.
