PATRICK BLANCHARD - self-titled by Stoney
It’s 2005 and country rocker Patrick Blanchard has returned with a little something old, something new, a bit borrowed and of course a touch of the blues. But those expecting the long-awaited follow-up to Patrick’s last disc (backed by the Big Mighty) will have to hold their breath. Sure there's old favorites like “Riverside” and “Ain’t Got Time” but these have been oh-fived in modern Patrick Blanchard fashion: more mature with the emphasis on soul as opposed to radio ready pop. Blanchard, still the youngest vet we can think of!, re-explores his roots and comes away with a winner. All that soul, and get this, country! Yep! Kun-tray!

Rounding out the great unit on this disc are guitarist Keith Jenkins, super drummer Jamie Jones and long-time Blanchard associates Adam Hatfield (guitar) and John Watkins (keyboards). Throw in production and engineering by the Ruskin Yeargain/Ray Mundy team and all the ingredients for a great disc are prevalent. But what REALLY makes this disc great? Why it’s Blanchard, of course!

The jewels on this self-titled release are the back to basics country style songs that make the best use of Blanchard’s warm soulful voice and phrasings. Most particularly “Don’t Forget About Me”, “Every Little Thing”, “New York” and “Faded Record Sleeves”. Not to knock on the other great tracks found here, Blanchard just shines best when floating in country rock territory somewhere between The Eagles and the Black Crowes.

Call me crazy, whatever, but as country and Americana plant a solid foothold in the A-U-G, look for Patrick Blanchard to help lead the way.
