STONEY SPEAKS

THE GODFATHER BRINGS THE GOODFOOT!! by John "Stoney" Cannon
After months of speculation and suspicion, the James Brown Soul of America Music Festival came and went this weekend to little fanfare and for the most part, little attendance. A crying shame for an event that if done with proper care, could not only have shown Mr. Brown the influence he has had on his hometown, but also could have shown the world that Augusta is proudly the home of the "Hardest Working Man in Show Business". But despite the festivals meager opening day attendance and near violent conclusion, there was a bright spot that let Augusta and the world know WHY the Godfather is worthy of a festival in his name.

While many critisize his previous run-ins with the law, one can never question the work ethic and love that Mr. Brown has for the Augusta community. Can anyone ever remember the last time one of his scheduled events, whether it be giving out toys, turkeys, or funky rhythms, did not happen on time? The Godfather takes his biz seriously and one full swoop silenced the critics once and for all!

Minus his regular backing band, the soul legend flew to town between shows up north and hit the stage dead on time at 6pm. He may still have a rock n roll wild streak in him but damn if the man ain't still as punctual as ever! It may have only been four songs but they may have been the sweetest quartet of tunes heard in regards to this years event. Thank God for the Godfather! Guess none of his lokal critics would have ever guessed that the man with the wild police photo would end up being the most professional, organized part of the festival. Critics = silence...again!

The rumblings have already begun about learning from this years mistakes...making it better next year...yada yada yada. To Mr. Walker, I just gotta say this: With as many festivals as this town has seen, how hard would it have been to CALL SOMEONE? Silly me, but having lokal bands pay tribute to one of their founding fathers seems so obvious that it's almost ridiculous. But then again...that's just my opinion.

Once again, let's thanks the Godfather himself for single handedly saving this event and whatever future it may have, if any. We love ya JB. You make us "Feel Good"!

Your Brother in Arms,
