CUSHIONS & CAFFEINE SATURDAY AFTERNOON SINGER/SONGWRITER SERIES
THAT PLACE COFFEE JANUARY 23, 2016 / BY NAJ

January 24, 2016

Since closing shop late last year, M.A.D. Studios has continued to work on bringing singer/songwriter events to the area. With an effort geared towards the listening experience, one of the first attempts in 2016 has been at Augusta coffee house THAT PLACE COFFEE located in the Le Pavillion Shopping Center.

Since May of last That Place Coffee has presented a great mix of coffee, food, and art to resident near the Martinez area of Washington Road with a mission to eventually add acoustic music to the mix. This started with artists such as Chris Hardy during art events and has continued with the relocation of the M.A.D. Thursday Night Open Mic to the all-ages venue located on the corner of Washington and Pleasant Home Roads. Now with the fine folks from M.A.D. Studios, That Place Coffee presents Cushions & Caffeine, a Saturday afternoon acoustic event open to all artists, every Saturday at 2pm.

If the name sounds weird, just imagine sitting in a living room with friends strumming acoustic and drinking coffee. Yes it's that kind of vibe. A chance to share not just songs or even stories about songs, but also creations still in the works. And so far after a nice trio of events that have included Will McCranie, Kendall Levesque, Douglas Oxford, and this past Saturday Dewayne Brock and Dylan McKerchie, the venue is starting to get hit up by performers of all ages looking to grab a slot to perform.

Kicking things off with a fun old rock & roll cover, Brock eased the patrons in attendance in with a nice mix of toe-tapping country-laced acoustic rock tunes and humorous tales from his past including youthful flashbacks of early romances growing up in his home state of Texas. A few tunes in, Brock called up guitarist/pickup builder to the Augusta stars Dylan McKerchie to add some tasty acoustic leads, the chill vibe between the two further building on the relaxed living room nature of the Saturday afternoon event.

After a short break which featured tunes by area singer/songwriter John "Stoney" Cannon (a member of new band the Palmetto Playboys with Brock), the pair of Brock and McKerchie jumped back up for a few more tunes to close out another wonderful afternoon of music.
